DESCRIPTION:Join us at the old Sebastian Beach Inn for this year’s beach cleanup. Specific location to be determined. \n2019 sea turtle nesting has already started with the Leatherbacks on Florida’s East Coast. This event is planned to clean the beach in advance of the Loggerhead season that starts around May 1. The Greens begin nesting in June with a season that can extend to November. The Carr Refuge is one of the most important beaches for sea turtles worldwide\, so let’s do our best to clean it including the small pieces of plastic that the hatchlings ingest.\nPlease bring the sunscreen and insect repellent of your choice. Bring a reusable water bottle. We will have water at the beach access points to fill your bottles.

DESCRIPTION:The Brevard Marine Advisory Council (BMAC) will be hosting an informational presentation by the St. John’s River Water Management District (SJRWMD) and the Melbourne Tillman Water Control District (MTWCD) on the topic of recent nutrient reduction measures associated with Turkey Creek and the Indian River Lagoon (IRL).  The presentation will be during the regularly scheduled BMAC meeting on February 21st\, starting at 6:00 pm.\n\n     Date/Time:  February 21\, 2019\, 6 PM\n     Location:  Viera Government Center\, 2725 Judge Fran Jamieson Way\nBuilding C\, Second Floor\, Space Coast Conference Room\n\n     Bill Tredik\, Initiative Leader with the SJRWMD\, will give an update on the completion of Phase I of the CI Canal Rediversion Program and how it is helping reduce the nutrients being discharged into Turkey Creek and the IRL.  Mr. Tredik will also talk about SJRWMD’s plans for Phase II of the C1 Rediversion Program.\n\n     District Engineer at the MTWCD\, Mike McCabe\, P.E.\, will give us updates on their new equipment and procedures for controlling aquatic weeds in the major C1 Canal and its contributing canals.  Mr. McCabe will have videos of the new mechanical harvester in action.\n\n     These presentations will show the progress being made to reduce the nutrient load and accumulations of muck that are potentially associated with the C1 canal and nutrient loading to the IRL and Turkey Creek.

DESCRIPTION:This film is an excellent opportunity to learn about what’s happening with Florida waters. #HelpTheLagoon . \nOcean Research & Conservation Association presents a special showing of this award-winning documentary.  The film follows scientist Dr. Paul Cox and his team as they investigate linkages between toxins produced by cyanobacteria (better known as toxic blue-green algae) and the neurodegenerative diseases ALS\, Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s.  These toxins have been in the news lately with major blooms in  Lake Okeechobee\, the Caloosahatche River\, and the St. Lucie estuary.  Toxic Puzzle describes the science behind some of the possible linkage between these blooms and the health of local residents.  Dr. Edie Widder\, CEO of ORCA\, will introduce the film and producer Bo Landin will be on hand for a Q&A following the film.  Admission is Free.

DESCRIPTION:Join us at our native plant nursery to learn about our habitat restoration program\, the importance of these native plants and to assist us with nursery maintenance.  Maintenance includes watering plants\, weeding and pruning\, propagating plants\, planting new plant species in pots and maintaining the nursery inventory. \nORCA’s native plant nursery is located at the IFAS Aquaculture Research and Extension Facility. SUMMARY:Shell Bagging for Living Shorelines Breakwater construction
DESCRIPTION:Volunteers will help ORCA bag fossilized shell for the construction of the living shoreline breakwaters along impaired areas of the Indian River Lagoon owned by the Indian River Lagoon Land Trust. Wear tennis shoes and bring sunscreen and a reusable water bottle.  Water\, snacks and work gloves will be provided. \nORCA’s habitat restoration program includes the construction of living shorelines\, which are shoreline protection projects that provide habitat for plants and animals\, stabilize shorelines and improve water quality. Living shorelines usually include the construction of a hard structure or breakwater made from rock or bagged shell and the planting of native vegetation along intertidal shorelines. DESCRIPTION:Save Our Indian River Lagoon Citizen Oversight Meetings are in the Government Center\, Building C\, 3rd Floor\, Florida Room\, unless otherwise posted. \nThe role of the Oversight Committee is to review monitoring data on timeliness of project delivery\, actual and updated project costs\, and actual nutrient removal effectiveness\, review new literature and local studies on the types of projects included in the plan and potential alternative project types\, evaluate alternative project proposals received from the community\, and recommend annual adjustments to the plan. The agendas for the meetings are posted on the Save Our Lagoon website under the Citizen Oversight Committee section http://www.brevardfl.gov/SaveOurLagoon/CitizenOversightCommittee. Each agenda has a Financial Statement that lists all the projects budgeted for the current fiscal year\, the status of contracting and the percentage spent so far on each project. \nTime is given at the end of the meeting for public comment.
