SUMMARY:Stop The John's Island Wastewater Effluent Pipeline!
DESCRIPTION:Call to Action! All Friends of the Indian River Lagoon! \nNeed: Stop the John’s Island wastewater effluent pipeline from being drilled and constructed under and across the Indian River Lagoon! \nDay/Date/Time: Tuesday\, April 23\, 9 a.m. \nLocation: Indian River County Administration Complex – Commission Chambers at 1801 27th Street\, Building A\, Vero Beach\, Florida\, 32960. \nActions:\n1. Attend public meeting Tuesday\, April 23\, at 9 a.m. (The Commission chambers holds 200 people. We’ll need these chambers at standing room only in opposition to this pipeline. Note: this is a lagoon health issue affecting all counties the estuary comprises.)\n2. Send a letter/email to the Indian River County Commissioners telling them your concerns and asking them to reject this highly controversial easement for the misguided construction of the John’s Island wastewater effluent pipeline.\nContact Information: Susan Adams (sadams@ircgov.com)\, Joe Flescher (jflescher@ircgov.com)\, Tim Zorc (tzorc@ircgov.com)\, Peter O’Bryan (pobryan@ircgov.com)\, and Bob Solari (bsolari@ircgov.com). For more contact information please visit http://www.ircgov.com/boards/bcc/.\n3. Want to help more? Please forward this information on to your lagoon loving friends\, family\, work groups\, government leaders\, local business partners\, and non-profit organizations. The more community involvement we have the louder our voice is for the well-being of the Indian River Lagoon. Together we can bring this estuary of national significance back to health! https://savetheirl.org \nMany organizations are working very hard to restore the health of this estuary. There could not be a worse time or project to create additional and unnecessary risks to our Lagoon’s health. (To view the current Indian River Lagoon Health Update Report please visit https://savetheirl.org/wp-content/uploads/mrc-report-card-2018-min.pdf.) \nJohn’s Island Water Management (a private company in operation solely for the John’s Island community and its golf courses) is pressing Indian River County for a highly controversial easement over Hole-in-the-Wall Island despite the easement having been flatly rejected by the island’s owner. \nUnfortunately\, the Indian River County attorney now plans to take this highly controversial easement to the Indian River Board of County Commissioners for approval during an upcoming meeting still to be determined. (The county taking an action like this for the use of a private entity is unprecedented.) \nThe proposal of the John’s Island wastewater effluent pipeline to be constructed under and across the Lagoon is an environmental risk to the estuary both in its construction and operation. This risk can be easily be avoided by connecting to infrastructure that is already in place. \nPlease Help Stop This Pipeline From Being Drilled Under & Across The Lagoon We Love & Cherish. SUMMARY:Clean the Carr (Archie Carr National Wildlife Refuge)
DESCRIPTION:Join us at the old Sebastian Beach Inn for this year’s beach cleanup. Specific location to be determined. \n2019 sea turtle nesting has already started with the Leatherbacks on Florida’s East Coast. This event is planned to clean the beach in advance of the Loggerhead season that starts around May 1. The Greens begin nesting in June with a season that can extend to November. The Carr Refuge is one of the most important beaches for sea turtles worldwide\, so let’s do our best to clean it including the small pieces of plastic that the hatchlings ingest.\nPlease bring the sunscreen and insect repellent of your choice. Bring a reusable water bottle. We will have water at the beach access points to fill your bottles.

SUMMARY:Vero Beach: Toxic Puzzle Screening and Q&A with Bo Landin
DESCRIPTION:This film is an excellent opportunity to learn about what’s happening with Florida waters. #HelpTheLagoon . \nOcean Research & Conservation Association presents a special showing of this award-winning documentary.  The film follows scientist Dr. Paul Cox and his team as they investigate linkages between toxins produced by cyanobacteria (better known as toxic blue-green algae) and the neurodegenerative diseases ALS\, Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s.  These toxins have been in the news lately with major blooms in  Lake Okeechobee\, the Caloosahatche River\, and the St. Lucie estuary.  Toxic Puzzle describes the science behind some of the possible linkage between these blooms and the health of local residents.  Dr. Edie Widder\, CEO of ORCA\, will introduce the film and producer Bo Landin will be on hand for a Q&A following the film.  Admission is Free.
