SUMMARY:May Timely Topic Luncheon: Let’s Get Better Together
DESCRIPTION:The League of Women Voters of the Space Coast hosts a Timely Topics Luncheon\, “Let’s Get Better Together” with Guest Speaker Brevard Zoo Executive Director Keith Winsten. \nThe event will be held on Wednesday\, May 2\, 2018 at 11:30 AM at the Brevard Zoo in the Nyami Nyami River Lodge. The Zoo is located at 8225 N. Wickham Road\, Melbourne\, FL 32940. \nKeith Winsten notes that in 2016\, the citizens of Brevard County made a bold statement by overwhelmingly voting to tax themselves to cover the costs of restoring the Indian River Lagoon and since that critical moment\, there has been a growing awareness that we control our own destiny when it comes to quality of life on the Space Coast and that we can make this a better community for ourselves\, our kids and our grandkids by getting involved in sustainability and conservation issues. \nThis event will have a broad-ranging conversation about how we\, as a community\, can get better together at fostering our special way of life on the Space Coast. \nBoxed Lunches from Green Turtle Market and beverages are provided. Menu choices are: Rosemary Chicken Panini\, Roast Beef Pub Special or Fresh Veggie Panini. Also included are potato salad\, chips and cookie. \nCost is $20 for members and $25 for non-members. \nFor more information and to register with menu selection\, visit http://www.lwv-spacecoast.org (Events\, Timely Topics). \nDeadline for registration is April 26\, 2018. \nFor additional information\, contact Doreen Archer at doreenarcher1@gmail.com or 321-622-4071.

SUMMARY:May Brown Bag Lunch: Living Docks
DESCRIPTION:Join us for our May Brown Bag Lunch\, with Dr. Kelli Hunsucker and Dr. Rober Weaver\, on Living Docks. Benthic communities\, such as oysters\, barnacles\, sponges and other filter feeding organisms\, are important in the health of the Indian River Lagoon. Oysters have the potential to filter up to 50 gallons of water per day! With this knowledge\, the Indian River Lagoon Research Institute (IRLRI) has been working with local community groups and homeowners on the Lagoon to create “Living Docks.” Attaching oyster mats and bags to docks along the Lagoon is a simple\, low maintenance method to help improve the water quality of the Lagoon. Just think\, if a single oyster can filter up to 50 gallons of water a day\, a healthy Living Dock community can filter up to 57\,000 gallons of water per day or about 21 million gallons of water per year per dock! Thats enough water to fill 420\,000 bathtubs!
