SUMMARY:Pineda Landing Site Clean Up
DESCRIPTION:On Saturday March 24th\, 2018 we will be conducting a trash clean up at what we call “Pineda Landing” site. This spot is the “rest stop” used by Bow Wave dragon boat camp\, and we want to make sure it’s as clean as possible for all to enjoy during that rest stop. \nIn the past there have been lots of trash to pick up including large items\, so if you have a pick up truck\, please join us so we can haul out all the trash. \nWe will have a limited amount of trash pickers\, garden gloves and 5-gal buckets to use during clean up. \nPlease make sure to:\n— bring garden gloves (to use during trash pick-up)\n— wear clothes and shoes – that you don’t mind getting wet/dirty and are appropriate for the weather that day\n— don’t forget your sunscreen\, hat\, sunglasses\n— we suggest you bring water (and snacks if you think you will get “hangry”)\n— if you have your own “5-gal bucket” to use instead of trash bag please bring as well\n— if you have your own “trash pickers” bring as well \nThis is a family oriented event and you may bring extra hands of any age (adult supervision required). \nWe do ask everyone to sign in when you arrive and also let us know when you leave\, we encourage the “buddy system”\, and recommend you use safety practices (in particular if on the water wear your safety vest at all times). \nThanks for your participation!\nPaddles Up! \n— Environmental Awareness Committee

SUMMARY:Hike at Triple N WMA
DESCRIPTION:We will hike the 7+ mile loop trail at Triple N Wildlife Management Area. No hunting is scheduled for this date. This WMA is off of US 192 about 20.2 miles west of the intersection of US 192 and I95. The pace will be easy going. There is a pit toilet at the parking lot. Bring lunch or a heavy snack. We can detour to a picnic table about 3/4 of the way through the hike. This will add a bit to the total miles\, hence the “+” sign. Would like to start walking at 8:30\, which explains the odd 8:20 start time.

SUMMARY:Assessing the health of the Indian River Lagoon - The IRL Report
DESCRIPTION:Marine Resources Council (MRC) is publishing the first comprehensive evaluation of lagoon health\, the State of the Indian River Lagoon Report (card). This enormous project required compiling millions of data from dozens of agencies\, establishing health indicators and targets\, designing easy to understand infographics\, and producing print and web-based communications. \nDr. Leesa Souto\, MRC’s Executive Director\, will talk about the report card challenges and findings and the vision for how this tool will move our community forward to save our lagoon! \n(Doors open at 6:30 PM) \nDr. Souto is the Executive Director of Marine Resources Council\, a nonprofit organization dedicated to protecting and restoring the Indian River Lagoon through science\, education\, and habitat restoration. She is an urban ecology researcher investigating the complex linkages between land-based human actions and water quality. Her professional career spans over twenty years of working to improve Florida’s water quality at Florida Department of Environmental Protection\, Brevard County Natural Resources Management Office\, and UCF’s Stormwater Management Academy. She has lived in Melbourne since 1994\, where she grew to know and love the Indian River Lagoon and she came to MRC in 2013 to help protect it!

SUMMARY:Beachside Cleanup with Keep Brevard Beautiful
DESCRIPTION:We are still feeling the effects of Hurricane Irma. With the recent heavy surfs\, there has been massive amounts of plastic washing up from the ocean bed. Because this plastic has been circling the ocean for 4 months\, it has broken down into pieces the size of colonels of corn and even smaller. It will take an ongoing community effort to tackle this problem and keep our beaches beautiful. Please come out and bring your innovative ideas on how to pick up these small pieces from our beaches. Can you fill an entire bucket?\nWe are challenging all Residents to the Beach Bucket Challenge… It’s basically like the ice bucket challenge but instead of ice water being dumped on your head\, we are challenging you to fill a 5 gallon bucket with trash instead. “No dumping involved”. Tag your photos with #beachbucketchallenge and share them here for your chance to win prizes from local beachside businesses…\nWe will be heading out tomorrow at 1:00pm to pickup trash off our local beaches\, and would like to challenge our local residents to do the same. Please go enjoy an afternoon on the beach with friends\, at your normal home break\, and donate some time to clean it up. Please invite all of your neighbors along. If we all join in together we can make a major difference.\nTag your photos with #beachbucketchallenge and share them here for your chance to win prizes from local beachside businesses.
