The festival is free to attend and offers beachcombing and marine life talks all day\, guided walks\, sharing table\, crafting demos by local artists\, educational displays\, make-n-take craft table\, ocean inspired art for sale\, art raffle to benefit Sea Turtle Conservancy\, a judged beachcombing competition\, treasure hunt\, food trucks\, and more! \nBe sure to find BIRLC among the special exhibitors at the event. \nOf special note\, beachcombing expert and coauthor of Sea-Beans From the Tropics\, Ed Perry IV\, will be onsite to identify your cabinet curiosities. Be sure to enter all of your favorite beach finds into our friendly competition! DESCRIPTION:Celebrating the history of Merritt Island on “Pioneer Day” is an annual event that has an exciting  appeal for history\, art\, music\, and nature lovers\, and children of all ages from 1 to 100.  Stop by the Brevard Indian River Lagoon Coalition booth for the latest news on Lagoon Restoration. \nThe February 8th event is a partnership between Sams House at Pine Island and St. Luke’s Episcopal Church located on a sleepy little stretch of North Tropical Trail on North Merritt Island.   From 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. the Sams House and St. Luke’s will host a wide variety of activities\, most of which are free. \nPioneer Day is held near the birthday of John Sams\, a citrus-grower and the first Superintendent of Brevard County Schools. Mr. Sams built the oldest standing home in Brevard County (circa 1875). The Sams Cabin is now a museum within the 1\,000-acre Pine Island Conservation Area\, which is owned and operated by the Brevard County Environmentally Endangered Lands Program. Mr. Sams also helped to build St. Luke’s Chapel in 1888 and is buried in the church cemetery. \nPrimary parking available at St. Luke’s with limited parking at Sams House.\nSuggested donation of $5 for parking includes continuous shuttle service between venues. \nPrint list of events here. \nEvents at St. Luke’s (10 am to 4 pm) 5555 N. DESCRIPTION:The 2022 Oyster Gardening training season has arrived! If you would like to help raise the next generation of filter-feeding champions\, join Brevard Zoo’s Oyster Gardening project as an Oyster Gardener or Oyster Buddy.  This workshop will be the last one for the year! \nTo qualify please check the following considerations: \n\nI have a dock or access to a dock along Brevard County’s section of the Indian River Lagoon (sections include Indian River\, Banana River\, Sykes Creek\, Grand Canal\, finger canals\, etc.)\nI can commit 1-2 hours of time per week to maintaining oyster habitats.\nI’m not planning to be out of town for extended periods of time (more than 2 weeks) over the next 6 to 9 months.\nI can lift at least 30 lbs.\nLive in a HOA community that has a community dock? Please check with HOA for approval and reach out to the Oyster Gardening team with any questions.\n\nNo direct access to the lagoon? Become an Oyster Buddy and assist Oyster Gardeners/the Oyster Gardening team when needed. \n*Please arrive at least 15 minutes early for a smooth check-in process and plan to stay for the entire workshop. \nWorkshop location: Will be provided closer to workshop date.
