SUMMARY:The Struggle to Live: Why Florida IRL Manatees Starve with SCPA
DESCRIPTION:Dr. Wanda Jones\, a marine mammal biologist and conservationist\, has conducted research on manatee feeding preferences and compared the nutrient composition of lettuce\, water hyacinth\, and hydrilla. Dr. Jones states that the science is clear. Instead of spraying deadly herbicide poison into our water to kill hydrilla and water hyacinth\, she advocates mechanically harvesting these nutritionally superior plants to feed the manatees in an attempt to save them from starvation. DESCRIPTION:Please join Restore Our Shores as they place a new oyster reef on the bottom of the Indian River Lagoon.  Exact location will be emailed to you prior to the 10th. \nRegistration is required and volunteers must be 15 years or older and be able to be outside in full sun during their shift. \nThis is a water activity and you will be in the water.  Please wear closed toe shoes (i.e. no flip flops\, Crocs\, etc)\, clothes that can get wet and dirty (long sleeve shirts preferable)\, hat\, sunglasses\, sunscreen\, reusable water bottle\, and snacks and anything else you will need for the day. \nIf you have any questions\, please contact restoreourshores@brevardzoo.org.

DESCRIPTION:The 2022 Oyster Gardening training season has arrived! If you would like to help raise the next generation of filter-feeding champions\, join Brevard Zoo’s Oyster Gardening project as an Oyster Gardener or Oyster Buddy.  This workshop will be the last one for the year! \nTo qualify please check the following considerations: \n\nI have a dock or access to a dock along Brevard County’s section of the Indian River Lagoon (sections include Indian River\, Banana River\, Sykes Creek\, Grand Canal\, finger canals\, etc.)\nI can commit 1-2 hours of time per week to maintaining oyster habitats.\nI’m not planning to be out of town for extended periods of time (more than 2 weeks) over the next 6 to 9 months.\nI can lift at least 30 lbs.\nLive in a HOA community that has a community dock? Please check with HOA for approval and reach out to the Oyster Gardening team with any questions.\n\nNo direct access to the lagoon? Become an Oyster Buddy and assist Oyster Gardeners/the Oyster Gardening team when needed. \n*Please arrive at least 15 minutes early for a smooth check-in process and plan to stay for the entire workshop. \nWorkshop location: Will be provided closer to workshop date. Keep an eye on your email for updates! \n**Only one registration is necessary per family/group** \nIf you have already been trained as an oyster gardener/buddy\, you do not need to be trained again.

DESCRIPTION:South Mainland Public Library presents Brevard Zoo Restore Our Shores Program Monday June 27 at 10:30 A.M. All ages are welcome. \nBrevard Zoo Restore Our Shores will provide an activity for youth of all ages. \nA supervising adult is required to be present in the room at all times. Unless scheduled\, programs should be food free for the safety and consideration of children with allergies. \nBrevard Zoo Restore Our Shores dives deep into the Indian River Lagoon to discover the creatures that call it home. Kids get the opportunity to “build” the Indian River Lagoon ecosystem together using a felt board and felt animals. They will spend time discussing what lives below the water’s surface and how everything is connected. Afterward\, kids and adults help color a mural of all the animals learned about during the talk.
