Public awareness and involvement are essential for the success of lagoon restoration projects. This includes volunteer opportunities, educational programs, and community-based monitoring initiatives.
Local organizations have volunteer opportunities:
Oyster reef building- Shoreline Plantings
- Clam distribution
- Growing Mangroves
- Shoreline Cleanup
Brevard Zoo Restore Our Shore Program

Many shoreline restoration projects in the IRL area now use a “layered” approach, combining:
- Mangrove plantings
- Oyster reef modules or bags
- Floating wetlands
- Marsh grasses
- Minimal hardscape only where absolutely necessary
This mimics natural estuarine edges and promotes resilience in the face of sea level rise, hurricanes, and algal blooms.
You can learn more about opportunities to volunteer and educate yourself on what you can do to help the lagoon at our website www.helpthelagooon.org/ You can also sign up to be a member and get regular updates on opportunities to volunteer and the when and where the next educational event sponsored by the Brevard Indian River Lagoon Coalition will occur.
