Sources of Pollution & What You Can Do

Pollution in the Indian River Lagoon comes from many sources, but the ones we can control start right at home — stormwater runoff, wastewater, and muck buildup.

Stormwater: Everything on our streets, driveways, and yards can wash into drains and end up in the lagoon. Help reduce runoff by planting native trees and shrubs, converting hard surfaces to permeable pavers, and keeping leaves and grass clippings out of the street.

Groundwater: Over 60,000 septic systems in Brevard County can leak nutrients into groundwater. Make sure yours is inspected and maintained regularly. Leaking sewer lines and over-irrigation with reclaimed water can also contribute. During winter, reduce watering and skip unnecessary fertilizing to help protect the lagoon.

Together, small steps on our own property protect the health of the lagoon.
