2024 Florida Legislative Priorities

8. Set maximum standards for Nitrogen and Phosphorous levels in reused water.

Florida as a state, has adopted reused water from sewage treatment plants for irrigation. It is an efficient way to process this effluent and does provide fertilizing nutrients to the land where it is applied.

In many cases, this partially treated water contains more nutrients than the soil and land can absorb. The amount of Nitrogen and Phosphorous in reused water varies greatly from plant to plant, so we are asking to set a maximum limit  for these nutrients that can be absorbed by the soil, so that they are not over fertilizing and running off into the waterways.

Also, there needs to be an educational campaign for residential users to understand that they do not need to fertilize their lawns, because the water contains fertilizing nutrients.
