2024 Florida Legislative Priorities
3. Funding to Support Enhanced Biosolids Treatment from Sewage Plants
Traditional sewage treatment plants kill harmful bacteria and converts the solid sewage into a byproduct that is typically sold as fertilizer to be applied on agricultural fields. The problem is that this byproduct has a much higher phosphorous content than can be absorbed by natural means. This results in the excess phosphates washing off these fields into the waterways where it feeds algae and weed growth, creating the need for further investment in weed removal and algae remediation.
It would make more economic sense and reduce negative environmental impacts if the solid effluent was throughly processed at the wastewater facility resulting in clean water and helpful energy producing byproducts.
Fortunately, there are many technological solutions being tested with trials showing economically feasible results. We are requesting that these technologies be vetted to determine the best approach and invest in their implementation for all wastewater treatment facilities, Including the new KSC Plant.
