Celebrating National Gopher Tortoise Day

Each year on April 10th, we celebrate National Gopher Tortoise Day. Gopher tortoises play an important role in maintaining ecosystem health, including that of the Indian River Lagoon.

Gopher tortoises are best known for their impressive burrows, which average 15 feet long and 6.5 feet deep. These burrows aren’t just homes; they are lifelines for a wide range of wildlife. More than 350 species have been documented using gopher tortoise burrows for shelter, including Florida pine snakes, eastern indigo snakes, gopher frogs, insects, and Florida mice.

During extreme heat, cold snaps, storms, or wildfires, these burrows provide a safe refuge. Since they alter their environment in a way that helps many other species, gopher tortoises are considered a keystone species, one whose presence is critical to the survival of others.

A land-dwelling tortoise might not seem important to our lagoon, but ecosystems are interconnected, and the health of upland habitats directly affects the waters of the Indian River Lagoon.

Gopher tortoises thrive in dry, sandy environments such as scrublands, flatwoods, and coastal dunes. When these habitats are preserved, they act as natural buffers, helping to absorb rainwater and reduce runoff before it reaches the lagoon. Healthy uplands filter pollutants, including fertilizers, pesticides, and sediments. This helps prevent excess nutrients from entering the lagoon, where they can fuel harmful algal blooms and degrade seagrass habitats.

Despite their importance, gopher tortoises face significant threats, including habitat loss and fragmentation from development, vehicle strikes, human disturbance, and illegal relocation or harm, which is prohibited in Florida. Due to these challenges, gopher tortoises are listed as threatened in Florida and are protected by law.

Protecting gopher tortoises is something we can all be part of. Here are a few simple but impactful ways to make a difference:

Never disturb a burrow; it is illegal and can harm dozens of species

  • Keep pets leashed in natural areas
  • Drive carefully in areas where tortoises are present
  • Support habitat conservation and restoration efforts
  • Spread awareness about the importance of this species

By protecting gopher tortoises, we’re helping protect the future of the Indian River Lagoon one burrow at a time.
