Florida House Bill 4057 was just introduced to the House of Representatives by Rep. Thad Altman with support from Senator Debbie Mayfield. This proposed $750,000 grant, in addition to the $250,000 in recurring funds from the state, would allow ORCA to deploy additional Kilroy water monitors that will continuously monitor Florida waters 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
Kilroy water monitors in the IRL are transforming the way we track pollution. Rainwater and irrigation carry nutrients off the land and into the lagoon leading to algae blooms. Stopping pollution requires tracking it to its source – a virtually impossible task when the primary detection method involves taking sporadic samples by hand, over broad spatial distances. The Kilroy network provides policy makers and stake holders with the information needed to track pollution to its source and find solutions that will help restore the lagoon to a vibrant and healthy ecosystem.
