C1 Canal/Sawgrass Lake Project

C1 Canal and Sawgrass Lake project

The redirection of billions of gallons of stormwater in the C-1 Canal in West Palm Bay is one of the most significant projects aimed a reducing nutrients into the Lagoon. Pumps redirect water at the Western end of the canal into the Sawgrass Lake natural water treatment area where vegetation captures nutrients and the water returns to the St Johns River. Largely completed in 2016 before the the SOIRL Trust Fund was established, the Fund are helping to finance additional improvements, including upgrade of Palm Bay’s reuse water, extension of sewer lines, and dredging of muck in Turkey Creek.
