Cocoa Beach Reclaimed Water Upgrade
Cocoa Beach accomplished its US EPA required upgrade to Advanced Wastewater Treatment (AWT) status in 2013 by improving nutrient reduction in normal operation. It recently completed an additional $6.6M project to improve its Reclaimed Water treatment during storms by improving inflow handling equipment, upgrading internal piping, replacing effluent sand filters with a special, high efficiency fabric system, installing new sludge concentrators and upgrading the plant electrical system including adding an automatic transfer switch for a second backup generator on site.
This major projects was financed by its rate-payers (20 year repayment of a State Clean Water Loan of $4-5M), a $1.5M grant from St Johns River Water Management District and $945K from the Save Our Indian River Lagoon (SOIRL) Trust Fund.
