What are the possible effects of enhanced seawater exchange between the IRL and coastal ocean? Florida Tech’s Restore Lagoon Inflow research project is a multi- year study funded by the State of Florida to answer this question and others.  The project will provide important data analysis to help local and state decision makers to determine whether creating an exchange of seawater with the IRL will help improve the restoration process.

Austin Fox, assistant professor of ocean engineering and marine sciences who is leading the geochemical aspects of the project, stressed “The initial assumptions that people make is that this is simple: you pump good water in, and bad water flows out. It’s much more complicated than that”.
