From FLORIDA TODAY: Brevard County approves final Indian River Lagoon plan; sales tax renewal next

February 11, 2026 – (From FLORIDA TODAY) Brevard County commissioners Tuesday, Feb. 10 approved the final yearly plan of the 10-year Save Our Indian River Lagoon program.

Brevard County LogoTheir vote comes as the county also considers a possible Nov. 3 voter referendum to renew the half-cent sales tax that funds the program.

The commission voted 4-1 to approve the plan, with Commissioner Katie Delaney the sole no vote. The vote on whether to do another referendum will come later.

The update includes 11 new projects and three project revisions. It funds 403 projects over the 10-year life of the plan (which ends this year), plus 942 individual quick connections to sewer and 2,671 septic upgrades.

Plan highlights sewage

The draft plan, recommended yearly by a citizens advisory group that includes representatives from science and business communities, includes $233 million focused on projects that improve sewage treatment and convert neighborhoods on septic tanks to sewer service. The plan adds 11 new projects and revises three others, and updates inflation reserves for projects in process but not yet complete. The plan addresses the need for reporting on costs, benefits, successes and lessons learned from completed projects.
