October 22, 2026 – Brevard County just surpassed 1,000 septic tank upgrades, converting conventional septic systems to advanced treatment unit (ATU) systems. The 1,017 upgraded septic tanks will prevent over 19,800 pounds of nitrogen pollution from entering the lagoon each year.

Brevard County has 62,000+ septic systems in the lagoon watershed. Conventional septic systems remove only 10%-40% of the algae-feeding nitrogen pollution that flows through them. Together, they contribute lagoon pollution equivalent to a 3.7-million-gallon sewage spill every day.
ATU systems can remove 65%-85% of this pollution. Each tank we upgrade or remove gets us one step closer to a cleaner lagoon. Find out if you are eligible for a septic upgrade grant of up to $20,000 by visiting our website.
Congratulations to Brevard County and the Save Our Indian Lagoon Project for this important milestone. Keep the momentum going!
