January 2020 marks the third year of the massive undertaking to save the Indian River Lagoon. The half cent sales tax has already collected more than $125 million, of which a fourth has been contributed by tourists. Approximately half the funding goes towards reducing excess nutrients which cause algae overgrowth. Another third of the money goes towards removing decades of pollution in the form of muck.
