Indian River Lagoon mangroves provide habitat for numerous species, hurricane protection

“Mangrove trees are super trees,” said Caity Savoia, lead scientist at the Marine Resources Council in Palm Bay.

Mangrove trees can survive in both fresh and salt water. Black and white mangroves excrete salt out of their leaves, while red mangroves have a filtration system in their roots to keep salt out but let water through.

Even when the salinity in the lagoon changes, they still thrive.
