The March of Mangroves

(UF Thompson Earth Systems Institute, 09/2020)

What does the expansion of the mangroves hold for Florida’s future? Why are the mangroves moving and what is their potential negative impact?  How do humans harm them? Today, climate change and coastal development have altered the mangrove’s traditional geographic span, extending its range farther north and more inland. While there are many advantages for mangrove expansion (erosion protection, habitat for plants and animals), research suggests there could be disadvantages as the mangroves move into established salt marshes. The salt marsh habitat available for flora and fauna that require an open vegetation structure would be reduced, thereby impacting species relying on this habitat.  Click here to read the entire research study performed by UF Thompson Earth Systems Institute.
